Safaris in Rajasthan

Safaris in Rajasthan

Safaris in Rajasthan: A Modern Phenomenon

Unlike the popular perception of safaris as a long-standing tradition in India, the concept of wildlife safaris as we know them today is relatively recent.

While the Maharajas and Rajputs were undoubtedly skilled hunters and spent time in the wilderness, their pursuits were primarily for sustenance or sport, rather than organized wildlife viewing experiences.

The Evolution of Safaris

  • Colonial Era: The British introduced the concept of wildlife conservation and created protected areas. However, their primary focus was on hunting big game.
  • Post-Independence: India gained independence in 1947 and began focusing on wildlife protection and conservation. National parks and wildlife sanctuaries were established.
  • Tourism Boom: The growing interest in wildlife and nature tourism in the latter half of the 20th century led to the development of safari infrastructure and organized tours.

Today, safaris in Rajasthan offer a unique opportunity to explore diverse ecosystems, from the Thar Desert to lush forests, and witness incredible wildlife, including tigers, leopards, and a variety of birdlife.
